Despite the documented harms associated with gaming disorder, few interventions exist, and even fewer have been rigorously evaluated. At the same time, there is growing interest in offering mental health services such as Internet and mobile-based interventions (IMIs). Given the affinity of people who game for online interaction, IMIs maybe ideal in terms of attracting people to treatment. The advantages of IMIs, compared to face-to-face interventions, also include increased accessibility, scalability, cost-effectiveness, anonymity, flexibility of pacing, and flexibility in where and when they are used.
The present study has two aims:
1) co-develop the content of an IMI directed at reducing symptoms of gaming disorder with people who have lived experience with gaming and building upon existing addiction IMIs interventions, incorporating lessons learned in the development of IMIs for gambling and substance use disorders.
2) Conduct a proof-of-concept prospective feasibility trial to prepare for a well-powered and rigorous RCT. A two-arm randomized feasibility study will be conducted with two parallel sites (i. Canada, ii., Germany, Switzerland, & Austria).
