Scientific Advisory Board (SAB)

The International Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) consists of outstanding international experts in the field of addiction and public health research. The members are elected by the board of trustees, for a period of 2 years with options for re-election. The aim of the SAB is to support the quality of work performed at the institute by recommendations on projects and publications.

Members

  • Prof. Wim van den Brink, M.D. Ph.D.
    Professor Academisch Medisch Centrum at Amsterdam University. Research: Addiction, forensic psychiatry, epidemiology, biological and brain research. Clinical research and pre-clinical studies piloting new interventions. Co-editor-in-chief of European Addiction Research.
  • Prof. Louisa Degenhardt, Ph.D.
    Professor of Epidemiology at National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales. Research: Clinical psychology, epidemiology of illicit drug use, comorbid mental health problems, illicit drug surveillance Australia, WHO Global Burden of Disease studies.
  • Prof. Keith Humphreys, Ph.D.
    Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine. Honorary professor of psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London. Research: Federal mental health and drug policies, health management programs, addictive disorders, self-help. Numerous functions in national mental health authorities, as senior policy advisor for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and advisor for UK government agencies.
  • Prof. Ulrich John, Ph.D. 
    Professor and Director, Institute for Social Medicine and Prevention at Greifswald University. Research: addictive behavior (smoking, pathological gambling, internet abuse etc.), development of screening tests and internet based research methodologies.
  • Prof. Kerstin Stenius, Ph.D.
    Research Director at Finnish National Institute of Health, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Research: Social policy, health economics, addiction psychiatry, social change and social welfare. Guest professor at Stockholm University, Centre for alcohol and drug research. Editor-in-chief of Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
  • Prof. Alex Stevens, Ph.D.
    Professor in Criminal Justice and Deputy Head of the University of Kent’s School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research. Research: Sociology of drugs, crime and health; drug policy. Advisor to UK Government.
  • Prof. Ilona Kickbusch, Ph.D., Dr. h.c. (from 1.1.2015)
    Director, Global Health Pogramme at The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. Past Head of Global Health Division at Yale University, USA. Author of a think-tank initiative “Global Health Europe: A Platform for European Engagement in Global Health”.
